It's not racist, just a bit sad and pathetic and something most of Europe would rather forget about. Just what did your grandparents do in the war? Mine were deported from there home, sent on a 3 week journey in cattle trucks into Siberia, whilst my grandfather was murdered by the Russians and dumped in a mass grave along with 4500 of his army comrades. My father nearly died of dysentry and my family had to start their lives all over again as exiles in a foreign country where they weren't particulary welcome. (Going home would have resulted in another one way trip to Siberia, as many unfortunate souls found out.)
The thing about that story is it is not remotely unique which is why we don't really like to talk about the war.
